Cutvey Books and QuickBooks Online: one, the other, or both

QuickBooks Online is the accounting software most accountants already work in, and it has payroll, inventory and bill pay that Cutvey does not. Cutvey Books keeps the books beside the job, in a simple mode or in full double-entry, and it can send your invoices and payments to QuickBooks Online one way. Plenty of studios will use both, and that is a sensible answer.

List prices billed monthly, checked November 2026 on Intuit's pricing page, which also shows 50% off the first three months. For one-person businesses Intuit's page now shows Free, Lite at $20 a month and Simple Start. QuickBooks Self-Employed appears there only as a sign-in link.

Books comes with every Cutvey plan: Solo $49, Pro $99 and Studio $199 a month, or $29, $59 and $119 a month billed yearly. The QuickBooks connection is included on each of them, for a seat that can manage finances. So for a studio that keeps both, the real sum is its QuickBooks plan plus the Cutvey plan it was already buying to run the work.

How the connection works

Cutvey sends to QuickBooks Online. It reads nothing back except your lists of accounts and tax codes, which you match up once in setup.

  • What goes: invoices, the payments on them, voids, refunds and write-offs, which arrive as credit memos.
  • What stays: expenses and bills. Those are entered wherever your accountant wants them.
  • When: every 15 minutes, or at once with Sync now. Nothing goes before the setup is saved, and a draft, or anything dated before the start day you pick, is never sent.
  • When it cannot: a record whose totals or tax would not match to the cent waits as Not sent yet, with the reason, until you fix it.

Two limits to know before you lean on it. Money you take back inside Cutvey, such as a reversed refund, is not sent, so it gets fixed in QuickBooks by hand. And your QuickBooks company has to keep the same currency as your Cutvey workspace. The setup steps.

What Cutvey Books is on its own

Books has two modes, and every workspace starts in the simple one. Simple mode is shaped like QuickBooks Self-Employed: bank and card lines from a CSV, OFX or QFX file or a US bank feed, rules, categories, splits, receipts, a mileage log, and quarterly estimates with a Schedule C summary for a sole proprietor.

Double-entry is a switch an owner or admin turns on. Then you get a chart of accounts and a journal, bills, an asset register with depreciation, loans, reconciliation, a month-end close, budgets, recurring entries, crew floats and about 25 reports, plus a pack of files for your accountant. The accountant can have a seat of their own that sees Books, Reports, Activity and each project's Money.

The point of keeping the books in Cutvey is that the work is already there. An invoice your client paid through Cutvey is already in them, and a crew booking is already a cost on its job before anyone types a thing.

When your accountant will still want QuickBooks

Most accountants have a way of working, and a lot of them work in QuickBooks Online. They know where everything is, they see all their clients in one place, and their review routine assumes it. If yours asks for QuickBooks, that is a good reason to keep it, and Cutvey's connection exists for exactly that case.

They will also want it if you run payroll through Intuit, pay bills from it, sell goods from inventory, file 1099s from it, or keep more than one company. Cutvey does none of those things.

Cutvey Books on its own fits when the business is one person or a small studio, the accountant is happy to work from Cutvey's reports and accountant pack or from an accountant seat, and nothing in the paragraph above applies. Ask before you cancel anything.

Where Cutvey falls short

There is no payroll, no bill pay, no inventory accounting and no 1099 filing, and a workspace keeps one currency. Bank feeds are for US business accounts with books in US dollars. The reports are worksheets for you and your accountant: they are unaudited and follow no accounting standard. The QuickBooks connection runs one way, and expenses and bills do not travel. Fewer bookkeepers know it than know QuickBooks, so ask yours before you switch.
