Track drives automatically on iPhone
On this page
The Cutvey app on your iPhone can notice when you drive and log the trip for you. Each drive lands in Books > Mileage as Unreviewed, ready for you to mark business or personal.
It is for seats with finance access, on every paid plan, and it is off until you turn it on for yourself on your own phone. Nobody can turn it on for you.
Turn it on
- In the Cutvey app on your iPhone, open Books > Mileage and press the Automatic tracking card. It opens the app's Mileage settings (also in Settings > Mileage).
- Turn on Track drives automatically.
- Allow Motion & Fitness, then location. When iOS asks, choose to allow location Always, with Precise location on. Without Always and Precise, the app cannot record a drive, and the Mileage settings say so.
You can also pick a Default vehicle for your trips and a Minimum trip, so very short hops are left out.
How it works
- The phone uses no GPS while you are still. When iPhone's motion sensors say you are driving, the app starts recording.
- When the car has been still for a few minutes, the trip ends. A red light or a drive-through does not end it.
- A trip under the minimum length (half a mile to start) or under 2 minutes is dropped on the phone.
- The finished trip is uploaded to Cutvey. If the app cannot upload right away, the trip waits on the phone and goes up later.
What Cutvey keeps, and what stays on your phone
The path you drove stays on your iPhone and is deleted once Cutvey has the trip. Cutvey receives only the two ends of the trip, the start and end times, and the distance you drove. Cutvey names each end from your saved places, or from the nearest address.
Review your trips
Open Books > Mileage in the app or on the web. Tracked trips carry a Tracked mark and their times. For each trip:
- Mark it Business or Personal.
- Pick the vehicle and add the purpose.
- Fix an address. Changing an address keeps the distance driven.
- Select two or more legs of the same drive and press Combine. Only trips by the same driver on the same day can be combined.
- Delete a trip you do not want.
When more than one person tracks, a Driver column shows who drove.
Your saved places and mileage rules work on tracked trips too: a trip that matches a rule, like your daily drive to the studio, is filed for you as soon as it arrives.
Taxes
A business trip counts toward your standard mileage deduction in Books > Taxes like any other trip. See Mileage and estimated taxes.
Good to know
- Tracking is in the Cutvey app on iPhone. It is not on iPad, Mac or Android.
- Tracked trips are your tax mileage log in Books. They are not billable project mileage and do not appear on a client's invoice.
- Turning it off stops tracking at once.
- Recording drives uses some battery, and only while you drive.
