Start with Books

Books is where Cutvey keeps your money in order: what came in, what went out, and what you may owe in tax. It starts simple, like a tidy spreadsheet that fills itself in, and grows into full accounting only if you want it to.

What you find in Books

The Books group in the sidebar holds:

  • Transactions: every money movement, imported or added by hand, each with a category
  • Invoices and Crew Invoices: what you bill, and what your crew bills you
  • Mileage: your business trips
  • Taxes: quarterly estimates and a Schedule C summary
  • Book Reports: profit and loss, tax reports, mileage logs and receipts

The Books home shows cards for profit and loss, expenses, your accounts, invoices, mileage and estimated tax.

Cutvey fills in its own money

You do not type your invoices into Books. When a client pays an invoice, a crew invoice is paid or an expense is logged on a project, Cutvey records it for you. Those rows keep the date and amount Cutvey recorded. You can still change their category, notes and tags.

Set it up

Open Settings > Books to tell Books about your business: your tax profile, vehicles, home office, the accounts you use, categories, tags and rules. A few minutes here makes every report more accurate.

When you need more

If you or your accountant want a chart of accounts, a journal and a balance sheet, you can switch on double-entry accounting at any time. Nothing is lost either way. See Switch to double-entry accounting.
