Switch to double-entry accounting

Behind the simple view, Books always keeps a full double-entry ledger. Switching double-entry on simply shows it to you, so you or your accountant can work the way accountants do.

Turn it on

  1. Open Settings > Books and choose the Accounting tab.
  2. Tick Show double-entry accounting.
  3. Save.

Turning it off later loses nothing. The ledger keeps running either way.

What appears

New items join the Books group in the sidebar:

  • Chart of Accounts: every account your books post to, with its balance
  • Journal: every entry behind your books, and space for manual entries
  • Bills: what vendors have invoiced you, and what you still owe
  • Assets: the gear you own, its depreciation, and your loans
  • Reconcile: check your books against a bank statement

You also get accounting reports in Book Reports, such as the trial balance, balance sheet, cash flow and aging reports, plus closing a period, recurring entries and the accountant pack. Banking shows in either mode whenever there is something to match.

Cutvey posts its own money

You never re-enter what Cutvey already knows. Invoices, payments, refunds, crew invoices, expenses and Stripe payouts post to the ledger by themselves. The accounts they use are marked Used by Cutvey in your chart of accounts.

Your start date

Your ledger has a start date. You can move it earlier, never into the future, and Cutvey shows you what changes before you confirm.

Next steps

Reconcile your bank accounts and close each month. See Reconcile and close a period.
