Print gear labels and scan them

Every item and kit in Gear can carry a label. Scan the label and Cutvey opens the item, adds it to a check-out or ticks it off in a stock-take.

  1. In Gear, tick the items you want, then press Print labels. To label everything at once, press Print labels with nothing ticked and choose Label every item.
  2. Pick your Printer or label paper: a Brother QL 62 mm roll, a DYMO LabelWriter (1 x 2-1/8 in), a Zebra 2 x 1 in thermal roll, US Letter sheets of 30 (Avery 5160 size) or A4 sheets of 24.
  3. Choose what each label shows: QR code, Barcode, Item number, Item name, Studio name, Serial number and an "If found" line.
  4. Press Print. Your labels open in a new tab, ready for your printer, on Mac, Windows or iPad.

You can print up to 500 labels at a time. Press Make this the default to start every print the same way. Change the words of the "If found" line in Gear settings, under Labels.

Keep the stickers you already have

An item can carry more than one code. Under Codes and label on the item, press Add a code and type or scan the tag that is already on it. Every code is unique in your workspace, so one sticker always means one thing.

Scan with a barcode scanner

Any USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner works on any computer. It types the code like a keyboard, so there is nothing to install. Gear tells a scan apart from typing by its speed.

In Gear settings > Scanning:

  • What your scanner sends after a code: leave it on Enter unless your scanner's guide says otherwise.
  • When you scan on the gear list: Open the item or Add it to a check-out.
  • Test my scanner shows whether a scan is read as a scan.

Scan with a camera

  • The Cutvey app on iPhone and iPad scans with the camera, and can keep scanning one code after another.
  • A browser scans with the camera only where the browser can read barcodes itself. Where it cannot, type the code or use a scanner.

Press Scan a tag on the Gear page, or Type it instead to find an item by its number, code or serial.

A code Gear does not know

Scan a new code and Gear offers Add a new item with this code or Attach it to an item.

If someone finds your gear

Each QR code opens a Cutvey page for that tag. Someone on your team who is signed in goes straight to the item. Anyone else sees one sentence saying the tag belongs to equipment managed with Cutvey, and nothing about you or the item. Put your phone number on the "If found" line if you want a finder to reach you.
