A client cannot pay an invoice

On this page

Most payment trouble comes down to a handful of causes. Here is what the client sees in each case, and what to do.

  • The invoice is still a draft. A draft has no live link yet. Send it, and the client gets a link that works.
  • They opened an old link. Press Resend invoice so they have the current one.

The page says it is not due yet

The invoice is scheduled. The client sees the date you scheduled it for and can pay once it is issued. If you want them to pay now, send it now.

The page says the invoice was voided

A voided invoice shows a short note that nothing is due, and cannot be paid. If that was a mistake, create a new invoice and send it.

There is no card button

  • Stripe is not ready. Check Settings > Payments. The Card payments card must show Connected. Onboarding incomplete or Needs attention means Stripe needs something from you first. See Connect Stripe.
  • Card payment is off on this invoice. Open the invoice and turn on Card (Stripe) in its ways to pay. The client's link picks it up right away.

Bank transfer instructions still show if you have set them up, so the client can pay that way meanwhile.

The page asks them to continue first

Before their first payment or PDF download, a client is asked once to agree to the short terms for invited users. One press to continue and the pay controls appear.

The page says the studio is not accepting payments

This shows when the workspace is not taking new payments, for example when your free trial ended before you chose a plan. Check Settings > Plan & Billing. Payments already made are always recorded.

Something about the card fee

If you pass on a card fee, it is shown before the client pays. Bank payments never carry it. A client who objects can pay by bank transfer instead.
