Tips and card fees

On this page

Two optional extras for the pay page, both off until you turn them on in Settings > Payments, in the Getting paid card. Both apply to card payments only, and neither counts toward what the client owes you.

Tips

Tick Let clients add a tip when they pay by card and press Save.

The pay page then offers no tip, 10%, 15%, 20%, or Other amount, up to the balance due. A tip is kept apart from the invoice: it never changes the invoice total or the project's balance, and Books records it as tips received. It shows on the client's receipt.

To leave the tip off one invoice, open that invoice and use On this invoice's pay page > Offer a tip.

Card fees

Passing the card fee on is off by default, it applies to credit cards only, and checking that you may charge it is yours to do.

Tick Pass the card processing fee on to clients who pay by card, then:

  1. Choose Where your business is. The fee is offered only for the places on the list: most US states, the Canadian provinces and territories except Quebec, and New Zealand.
  2. Enter the Card fee, in percent. It must be more than 0 and at most 3, with at most two decimals. Colorado and Oklahoma are capped at 2%, and Canada at 2.4%.
  3. Tick the box to accept responsibility. It says that you have checked the rules that apply to you and your clients, and that the fee is no more than your card processing cost.
  4. Press Save.

The fee is shown on the pay page before the client pays, and on their receipt. Bank payments never carry it.

Credit cards only

When the fee is on, the client chooses the kind of card first. Paying by credit card carries the fee, and that payment only accepts credit cards. Paying by debit or prepaid card carries no fee, and that payment only accepts those.

If a fee still lands on a card that is not a credit card, Cutvey refunds that fee by itself, once.

With autopay, the fee is charged only on a saved credit card.

Refunds

A tip stays with you when you refund the invoice with Refund, unless you give it back in Stripe. A card fee goes back with the refund: all of it on a full refund, and its share on a part refund. See Refund, void or write off an invoice.
